Measuring Impact of Adaptive and Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control on Throughput of Signalized Intersections

We use SUMO open source software to implement and analyze the performance of signal control and platooning. We investigate how the existing technologies, such as adaptive cruise control (ACC), and the emerging technologies, such as cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC), can mitigate the congestion problem on city streets by increasing the throughput of intersections, as vehicles form platoons. Platoons were shown to improve freeway throughput depending on protocol. Here we show that this concept can be effectively applied to city streets with signalized intersections.
