Berkeley Institute of Design
The Berkeley Institute of Design (BID) is a new research and teaching initiative for the design of technology in context. It takes an integrated view of design of information technology, products and environments. The lab includes researchers from EECS, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, SIMS and Education. Active research projects include ambient and context-aware systems, new materials and prototyping processes, location-based services, tangible interfaces, learner-centered educational tools, tools for design and understanding the design process, and multi-view displays. The lab is in the process of being fitted out with a large array of vision and sound sensors and controllable light and audio to support a variety of "smart environment" projects. The BID group has an emphasis on socially-relevant design through projects on assistive technologies, low-income and third-world communities, environmentally-benign materials, energy efficiency and support for emergency services.
