BEARS 2004

Dear BEARS Attendee,

The Berkeley Institute of Design (Bid) cordially invites you to attend an open house on Thursday, February 10, 1:00-3:00 pm. Lunch will be provided.

The Berkeley Institute of Design (BID) is a new research initiative for the design of technology in context. It takes an integrated view of design of information technology, products and environments. The lab includes researchers from EECS, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, SIMS, Art Practice and Education. Active research projects include educational technology, visualization, context-aware systems, multi-view displays, location-based services, tangible interfaces, tools for design and understanding the design process, and new materials and prototyping processes. The lab has a large array of vision and sound sensors and controllable light and audio to support a variety of "smart environment" projects. The BID group has an emphasis on socially-relevant design through projects on assistive technologies, low-income and third-world communities, environmentally-benign materials, energy efficiency and support for emergency services.
