Quantum information processing investigates fascinating issues at the foundations of computer science and quantum mechanics. Quantum computers provide exponential speedups for computational tasks such as integer factorization, and properties of quantum bits can be used to achieve secure communication. The Berkeley Center for Quantum Information and Computation brings together researchers from across campus (from the colleges of Chemistry, Engineering and Physical Sciences) to work on fundamental issues in quantum algorithms, quantum cryptography, quantum control and the experimental realization of quantum computers. The inauguration of the center will feature a sequence of plenary talks about both foundational and experimental aspects of the subjects by experts from similar centers around the World.
