RISC-V is an open instruction set designed along RISC principles developed originally at UC Berkeley and is now under the governance of the RISC-V Foundation. This report discusses the historical precedents of the RISC-V instruction set from 18 prior instruction set architectures. Of the 122 instructions in RISC-V: 98 instructions appear in at least three different instruction sets, 18 appear in one or two, and 6 have no precedent in the architectures we surveyed.
