Technical Report No. UCB/CSD-83-155
December 1983

The current plans for the evolution of the Berkeley UNIX operating system are outlined. The objective of these plans is to make the system capable of offering its users various degrees of autonomy, transparency, and user power. The possible stages of such evolution, and the projects that have been recently undertaken to provide the bases for stage-to-stage transitions are briefly described.
