Computer aided geometric design and modelling involves the representation, specification, design, and manipulation of three-dimensional objects whose shapes are delineated by free-form curves and surfaces. Computer graphics is concerned with the synthesis and manipulation of images and the communication of these images to the human observer. One of the underlying themes of the Berkeley Computer Graphics Laboratory is the integration of these two fields of endeavour. This includes specific research efforts in each of these fields. We are interested in developing state-of-the-art methods for creating highly realistic images of three-dimensional objects. This paper discusses various components of the image generation process which are being studied at the Berkeley Computer Graphics Laboratory.
