, 2002

We designed and compared two visual displays for providing information about environmental audio to deaf individuals. Our design focuses on non-speech sound such as ringing phones and knocking. The displays communicate combinations of pitch, amplitude, and positional information. A controlled experiment involving deaf participants found neither display to be significantly distracting. However users preferred the display that omitted pitch but included positional information and found that display easier to monitor. Our contribution is the design and evaluation of a visual display allowing monitoring of ambient and notification information sounds by the deaf.
