Biography
Osama Shanaa is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor with EECS at Cal Berkeley since 2017. He also works for the industry as a Senior Director at MediaTek Inc. since 2008, where he is in charge of developing various CMOS RF SoC technologies and products for cellular (2G, 3G, 5G mmWave), broadcast (TV tuners, FM) and connectivity (WiFi, BT, GPS/GNSS, NFC) resulting in multi-billion dollar annual revenues with more than 10M units per week production shipments. Between 1995-2008, he held various IC design positions at Radio Comm. Corp. (now part of Cypress Semi), National Semiconductor (now part of TI), and Maxim Integrated Products (now part of ADI), where he led many successful RF wireless designs for PCS, CDMA, WCDMA, WLAN and WiMax. He was the first in the world to demonstrate direct-conversion radio architecture for cellular 3G in an actual product for cellphones in 2000. In 2005, he was invited to Cal Berkeley to teach an advanced circuit design class for wireless communications, and later in 2017 joined its faculty. Dr. Shanaa currently serves on the Executive Committees for the IEEE RFIC Symposium, and was the conference General Chair in 2022. He is a former Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, a Guest Editor for the IEEE Journal of Solid State Circuits, and a Distinguished Lecturer for the IEEE Solid State Circuits Society. Prof. Shanaa is an IEEE Fellow and hold over 30 issued patents.
