Eric Brewer has been selected as an ACM Fellow which is a significant honor. Fellows are recognized for their outstanding achievements in computer science and information technology and for their significant contributions to the mission of the ACM. Only 38 out of 63,000 ACM member fellows were named this year. Bernhard Boser has been elected Vice President of the IEEE Solid State Circuits Society, effective January 1, 2008. After two years, the Vice President is typically elected President by the Administrative Committee. Richard Muller was awarded the 2007 Distinguished Service Award by the IEEE Electron Devices Society at their International Electron Devices Meeting on December 10th. This award recognizes Prof. Muller's outstanding service to the Society and its sponsored activities. Chenming Hu has been elected a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). CAS is a leading academic institution and comprehensive research and development center in natural science, technological science and high-tech innovation in China. Andy Neureuther has received the University Research Award from the Semiconductor Industry Association in conjunction with the Semiconductor Research Association for “research efforts to advance the U.S. Semiconductor Industry”. He has also been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the BACUS International Photomask Technology Group of SPIE for “contributions to education and advancement of semiconductor lithography.” Approximately 30 of Professor Neureuther's former students are currently working in the semiconductor industry and his research group has contributed over 300 papers on the physics and modeling of semiconductor lithography. Paul Gray has won the 2008 IEEE Robert N. Noyce Medal “For pioneering the development of analog integrated circuits”. This medal is given to individuals who have demonstrated contributions in multiple areas including technology development, business development, industry leadership, development of technology policy, and standards development. Lotfi Zadeh has been selected by the Columbia University Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science to receive the Egleston Medal for 2007. This award is given in recognition of the highest achievement in engineering by an alumnus of the school. Ali Javey’s research on developing an alternative doping method based on surface chemistry for electronics based on nanowires and other nanosized components is featured in a Chemical & Engineering News article titled “Nanoscale Doping Via Chemistry: Surface reactions tailor silicon's properties with high spatial precision”. Kathy Yelick has been named director of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC). NERSC is DOE’s flagship computing center for unclassified research and is managed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The center provides state-of-the-art supercomputing and data storage resources to more than 2,600 researchers at universities and research institutions around the world. Investing a small portion of our national resources into a science of cost-effective, resource-efficient manufacturing would benefit American consumers and support millions of workers in this vital sector of the US economy.” More>> Dave Patterson has been named a Fellow of the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science). Election as a Fellow of AAAS is an honor bestowed upon members by their peers and are recognized for meritorious efforts to advance science or its applications. A research project led by Chenming Hu with Tsu-Jae King-Liu, Eli Yablonovitch, and Ali Javey has been approved by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) for $7.5M funding over five years. The project goal is to reduce IC power consumption by 10 times with a new transistor that can be manufactured with CMOS technology but is based on a different physical principal of operation. Richard Muller has been selected to win the 2007 IEEE Electron Devices Society Distinguished Service Award. This is award is given to recognize and honor outstanding service to the Electron Devices Society and will be presented in Washington in December. Ion Stoica is the 2007 winner of the CoNEXT (International Conference on Emerging Networking EXperiments and Technologies) "Rising Star" Award that recognizes a young researcher, generally, an individual who has completed a Ph.D. roughly within the past seven years, who has made outstanding research contributions during this early part of their career. Ruzena Bajcsy has received the IEEE SMC Outstanding Achievement Award in recognition of her significant contributions to the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society. UC BERKELEY invites applications for several approved tenure-track positions in ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND COMPUTER SCIENCES at the ASSISTANT PROFESSOR level, and one approved position at the Associate or Full Professor level, beginning Fall 2008, subject to budgetary approval. Joint appointments with other Berkeley departments are also considered. More>> UC Berkeley is among six universities to be part of the program started by IBM Corp. and Google Inc. on college campuses to promote computer-programming techniques for clusters of processors known as "clouds". Cloud computing allows computers in remote data centers to run parallel, increasing their processing power. Each company will spend between $20 million and $25 million for hardware, software and services that can be used by computer-science professors and students. More>> Robert K. Brayton has been chosen as this year’s recipient of the Phil Kaufman Award for Distinguished Contributions to Electronic Design Automation. Prof. Brayton is receiving the award in recognition of his contributions as an industry pioneer and one of the world’s authorities in logic synthesis and formal verification. More>> National Instruments is partnering in the creation of the NI Embedded Systems Laboratory, whose vision was developed by Edward Lee, Chair of EECS. The new lab will be used for teaching and research in the area of graphical system design, and will provide an open environment in which all EECS graduate students and upper division undergraduates, as well as researchers from other departments, can design and prototype their projects. More>> Mike Fister, Cadence's president and CEO, along with Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli, officially unveiled at the CDNLive! Conference Cadence Design Systems’ 45-nm IC design implementation and DFM (design for manufacturability) tool flow, which integrates into the Cadence lineup new technologies including a DFM predictor, an SSTA (statistical-static-timing-analysis) tool, and a critical-area-analysis engine. More>> Ming Wu has been selected by the Optical Society of America to win the 2007 Engineering Excellence Award for "seminal contributions in the fields of optical micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) and ultrafast semiconductor lasers". The award will be presented at Frontiers in Optics on September 17, 2007 in San Jose. Dave Patterson will be inducted as a Fellow of the Computer History Museum on October 16, "for fundamental contributions to engineering education, advances in computer architecture, and the integration of leading-edge research with education." Bernhard Boser is part of an interdisciplinary research team establishing a new Center for Exposure Biology at UC Berkeley. The center will focus on developing biomarkers and biosensors to allow cost-effective testing for blood cancer risks. The center has received a $4.7 million grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) as part of the Exposure Biology Program of the Genes, Environment and Health Initiative. Leon Chua has been elected as an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (Engineering) for his work which is recognized on an international level. David Culler has won the ACM SIGMOBILE 2007 Outstanding Contributions Award. This award recognizes an individual who has made significant and lasting contributions to the research on mobile communications and wireless networking. EECS professors Krste Asanović (design of computer systems in the broadest sense, system software to innovative high-level architectures for cpu’s and memory systems) and Jose Carmena (brain-machine interfaces; neuroprosthetics; sensorimotor learning and control; neural ensemble computation) have won the Okawa Foundation Grant for 2007. This prestigious award comes with a $10,000 research gift.
